Flexeril and sleep apnea?
Written by admin on January 10, 2009 – 3:48 pm -My dr has prescribed Flexeril for my endless sleepless nights filled with pain due to degenerative disk disease and restless leg syndrome. I have undiagnosed sleep apnea (yeah, I know I need the sleep study). If I lie on my back, I can sometimes stop breathing. Would this medicine make this worse? I haven't filled the prescription yet due to fear of this.
**I usually don't take narcotics or similar meds**
Thanks Gloria. That's good advice. I've had the tens units, the traction, the hot/cold, etc. All before my first MRI that showed just how bad my spine is. I've had multiple MRI's, x-rays, nerve conduction tests, surgery, steroid injections, you name it. I'm going to see my 8th neurologist the 22nd to see if a particular part of my lumbar spine can be operated on, if not, another doctor is going to surgically insert a pain pump. I'm 48 years old with a lifelong battle with back problems, and am now walking with a cane if I venture out into a store or place where I can't sit down often. My doctors are trying to help me ease some of the pain and get some good sleep, since I have refused all the pain medications offered me. I do take an arthritis med. I have dealt with criminals in my job for over 20 years, most with some sort of addiction, and for this reason, addictive medicines scare me.
Thanks also to you, bodmod. For some reason the dr made a comment that the patches wouldn't help me.
This I can help you with, you need traction tell your doctor to refer you to physical therapy and get a MRI disc take it with you if the PT is set up to read it, well help the PT to see what wrong. I suffer years spent $$$$ the one that help me is traction believe me.call around find PT that has a traction and a ten unit that pure love I only use ten maintan my pain at home and traction 2 times a week be four the pt I'M 53 and the pain, I cry-ed and I'm not one to cry I would rather have more baby natural. and your right to not take the narcotics. you do under stand you well have to live with amount of pain, the rest of your life. also use a roll up towel tape it put it under your butt just at the base you'll have to adjust it and if you can a very soft pillow one you can roll, punch, fold to fit you neck as for your back also put a pillow under you legs teach your self to sit right, walk right, and try sleeping on your side at times it'll take time, but you well get needed sleep and that what you need sleep aid take turns you won't need the flexeril after the TENS UNIT check to see if your ins well pay for a portable unit look them up on the Internet you'll love it, but for now get in a hot spa. (DON'T FORGET MOIST HEATING PAD TAKE CARE NOT TO BRUN YOURSELF GOOD LUCK

Flexeril has never bothered me and I have sleep apnea. And it will definitely help you sleep. But, definitely go talk to your pharmacist about it; they can tell you for sure if it will bother you. Did you disclose to your pain doctor that you have sleep apnea? They would never rx something if wasn't safe. Have you tried Fentanyl Patches for your pain? I was like you and told that the pain pump was my last option, but I tried Fent patches first and they reduced my pain 85%. Worth a talk with your doc. Good luck
