Has anyone else's baby had an apnea episode?
Written by admin on February 2, 2009 – 7:36 am -When my first son was about 7 weeks old, I found him not breathing while he was taking a nap. He was pale, and when I picked him up he was really limp and floppy, non-responsive, etc. I thought he was dead! It was so scary! Anyway, he had to wear a breathing monitor for a year. He had acid reflux that caused apnea episodes sometimes…
WELL, now my second son is 6 weeks old, and it happened with him yesterday!! It took a while to wake him up, so we're still in the hospital, being monitored and waiting for an apnea monitor… Has anyone else experienced this? It's such a horrible feeling to find your baby not breathing and non-responsive!
Thanks for that. He was overheated yesterday when this happened, I think.. he was pretty bundled up but in his swing… I was taking off his clothes, trying to wake him up, ran outside with him, and he was just limp and not doing anything! He'd kind of start breathing, then stop and keep drifting off… It was so scary!
It's just that my first son had it due to his reflux, and the pediatrician said this sort of thing can be hereditary.
It is very common in newborns. Some do forget to breath. Sometimes it is due to a reflux other times there is just no reason or way of knowing if it is going to happen. It can be a scary experience. I have seen this in families as well and at our hospital we always test babies of siblings who have apnea spells either in the hospital prior to discharge or our pediatricians send them home with an order for monitoring. Each facility is different. If you have not done so take a CPR class. It will give you more confidence and might help alleviate that panic feeling should it ever happen again. Good luck.

I understand all to well. In fact, doctors are beginning to link infant sleep apnea to SIDS, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome – the very common and tragic death of infants while they are sleeping.
I am Terri Lynn Brearey, native New Smyrna, and founder of this 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization, dedicated to the education and awareness of infant and children sleep apnea, SIDS and pediatric pulmonary issues and to providing assistance with life-saving equipment that will prevent loss of life. My son, Trenten, was rushed to the hospital at 5 weeks when I noticed he stopped breathing while sleeping. Doctors told my family that he had stopped breathing 300 times the first night he was in the hospital. That’s 300 times he could have stopped breathing for good!
Once diagnosed and treated, I realized we had to do something to inform other parents and families about this common disorder. I have since committed my life to the education and research of others which I believe – and know first-hand - is the key to the survival of children afflicted with sleep apnea and pulmonary issues.
Believe me, no one around me knew about this disorder when I first discovered that it was affecting my son. I want everyone parenting a young child to have access to this crucial information that I now know saved my son’s life.
You are very blessed. My thoughts and prayers are with you as you endure this journey in which you are on.
