i think my dog has sleep apnea?

Written by admin on April 6, 2009 – 1:40 pm -

i have a large breed dog, a great pyrenees, that i suspect has sleep apnea. he is not over weight but like i said he is a big fella, kinda the size of a saint bernard. he's 3 yrs old and has snored for a while, pretty loud sometimes but this morning he jumped into bed with us and i swear he stopped breathing sometimes when he was sleeping. his nose was right in my face and i noticed it seemed like he stopped breathing for seconds at a time. i put my arm around his chest to see if it moved but it didn't seem to. then he made a little gasp, opened his eyes for a sec then went back to sleep and snoring.
is it possible for a dog to have sleep apnea and any idea how it would be treated? i think my vet will roll his eyes if i ask him :(

I wouldn't care if the vet rolls his syes. Find one that doesn't.
I think it is very possible that he stopped breathing, maybe in dogs the heartrate/ breathing rate slows way down when they are in a deep sleep.
I would just call a couple vets and see what they say.
Good luck

BTW my Mother in Law had 2 Great Pyrenese for years. Sampson and Sheba :)

Can a lack of sleep cause panic disorders during the day?

It can't cause a panic disorder but it can make you more anxious and jumpy.

It's important for your general health to get a good night's sleep.

I have a sleep disorder, I cannot fall asleep until dawn. Is there anyone else out there like me?

Written by admin on April 6, 2009 – 1:39 pm -

I know its a sleep disorder, i forgot what its called. My doctor wanted me to go to some sleep clinic. I would just stay awake the entire time. I just want to know if anyone elese has this trouble and how to correct it.

it's called delayed sleep phase disorder and it's a disorder of your circadian rhythm. They usually use light therapy to trick your brain into thinking it's a different time of day as well as sedatives until you can get your body back on track – however, it could be a stingy thing and you might have this schedule disorder for the rest of your life. My suggestion – get a night job.

Does anyone have a young child who had a tonsillectomy for sleep apnea?

Written by admin on April 6, 2009 – 1:39 pm -

My 3 year old is tired all day and snores at night. I am going to take her to an ENT to discuss having her tonsils out. Has anyone's child had this done to improve sleep apnea and have you noticed a difference? Thank you.

my SIL's son is 8? and has cerebral palsy and recently had his tonsils out for his sleep apnea…it did improve the problem. this should be something entered into with MUCH thought, not lightly…your child's ENT will be able to suggest the best course of action, whether it be a tonsillectomy or some other solution. good luck to you and your child! apnea can be a very serious problem.
